The opinion Against President Bio’s PR System for the 2023 Elections
Members of the All People’s Congress (APC) party has recently come out against the proportional representation (PR) system of voting. While PR is a popular electoral system that is used in many countries, the APC party membership argues that it is not the best option for Sierra Leone.
One of the main criticisms of PR is that it can lead to a fragmentation of political power. Under PR, small parties and independent candidates can gain representation in government even if they only receive a small percentage of the vote. This can make it difficult for any one party to gain a clear majority and form a stable government.
Another issue with PR is that it can lead to a lack of accountability among elected officials. In PR systems, elected officials are not directly accountable to the voters in their specific geographic area, which can make it harder for citizens to hold their representatives accountable.
It is of the believes that a different electoral system, such as first-past-the-post, would be more effective for Sierra Leone. This system would ensure that the party or candidate who receives the most votes in a given area would be elected, which would lead to a clearer mandate for the government and a more accountable system of representation.
Overall, the Members of the All People’s Congress (APC) is of the opinion that proportional representation system is not the best fit for Sierra Leone and that alternative systems should be considered. While PR may have its benefits, the party argues that it is not the best option for ensuring stability, accountability, and representation for all citizens.
